In this form of healing, the healer lays his hands on the head, on the shoulders, on a painful spot, or does not touch him at all. At the same time he says a prayer - loudly or softly. It supports empathy and the awareness of being a channel for God's help. In early Christianity, this was referred to as "pneuma" (Greek: spirit), the so-called breath of life or the Holy Spirit, which was conveyed in this way. This practice was used in prayers for healing and for blessing (e.g. Matth. 19,13 or Mk. 8,23). Often Jesus and his disciples laid hands for healing. But before that Jesus asked the person to be healed: " Do you want to get well?" (Jn 5:6). This question causes the person seeking healing to become aware of whether or not they really want to be healthy. This is the first prerequisite of a properly understood healing. As long as the subconscious blocks the path to healing for any reason, accepting help would be difficult. The person seeking healing must be able to make the healing his own and connect it with his self-healing powers. In prayer, the person comes before the presence of God in the innermost part of his heart. If this happens in sincere devotion, a wonderful healing power emanates from prayer.
Faith healing is an ancient healing tradition that is not limited to the Christian church alone and turns to a spiritual source, a God or spirit, to assist in the healing of a sick person.
In Christian faith healing, the healer's connection to God comes through most strongly of all healing modalities. In Matthew 9.22, Jesus is touched by a woman seeking healing only by his clothes and she is made well as a result. Jesus tells her, "Your faith has helped you." Those who have already experienced faith understand by the power of faith something highly real in their relationship with God that makes the healing process possible. Profound reversals of pathological processes can happen as a result. A faith healer refers to "divine energy" flowing through him, as many other healers do. But with the faith healer, the contact with God is particularly strong. He asks God for healing for the one seeking healing. A healing intercession can also take place from a distance.
